Information for Community Groups

Fundraising events such as sausage sizzles and cake stalls are a popular way to raise money for community groups.

A brochure is available to download at the bottom of the next page which provides guidelines and a checklist for temporary food premises.

The NSW Food Authority has information available which is a clear concise guide for community groups.

Notification

Fundraising events, that is, events that raise funds solely for community or charitable causes and not for personal financial gain are exempt only if the food sold is not potentially hazardous or is to be consumed immediately after thorough cooking (such as sausage sizzles or jams/chutney or cakes without cream).

Potentailly hazardous food means food that has to be kept at certain temperatures to minimise the growth of any pathogenic micro-organisms that may be present in the food or to prevent the formation of toxins in the food.  For example; meat and dairy products are considered potentially hazardous, so a charity or community group providing such foods in exchange for a financial gain is required to notify NSW Food Authority.  To check whether you have to notify your event with NSW Food Authority go to NSW Food Authority online services.

All fundraising events that are stalls selling food are required to notify Council.
